2. Pony Rides

Shepherd’s Fold Stables, situated in the stunning Elandsdrift Valley, has been around for 26 years offering horse riding for all ages and all levels of experience. They have riding lessons, trail rides, breakfast outrides and the exciting Pony Camp with the next one taking place from 2 to 6 October.

The emphasis is on a fun learning experience for all children interested in horses. The programme consists of riding lessons, outrides, ‘hands-on’ care of horses, activities, lectures, and games. No previous riding experience is required as all riding abilities are catered for in a controlled environment. This is suited to children between 6 to 16 years with all activities supervised by experienced instructors, who all have Level 1 First Aid certificates. The day starts at 8am, ending at 5pm, with children welcome to attend all five days or just individual days. There is also the option of a sleepover – available to children over 8 years – at an additional cost. Visit www.shepherdsfoldstables.co.za

3. ZooClub

Pretoria is home to the country’s largest and most diversely inhabited zoo. The National Zoological Gardens – or Pretoria Zoo as it’s commonly known – is an 85-hectare animal enclosure rated as one of the top eight best zoos worldwide with an incredible collection of wildlife and plantlife. Children are given a really fantastic opportunity to learn about conservation during a four-day course which is open to children in Grades 7 to 12. This activity-filled programme introduces youngsters to the wider field of nature conservation, where they get to explore and research the adaptations, behaviour and conservation issues of animals in the zoo, reptile park and aquarium. They will interact with the zoo’s conservation and veterinary staff, and will also assist with the husbandry of selected animals.

The course is facilitated in English and runs from 8am to 4pm with the successful completion including a certificate and T-shirt. They can also join the ZooClub which aims to further inspire its members about conservation and encourages them to follow a career in science. The cost is R150 per person and the next course runs from 3 to 6 October. Contact Karabo Mabuse at karabo@nzg.ac.za

4. Sand Art

For children with a penchant for crafts then the Sand Art demonstration and experience is the perfect fit. Taking place at Montana Family Market on Saturday 7 October from 11am to 1pm, children will get a hands-on instruction in sand art, getting the chance to create beautiful pictures through this unique, minimal mess medium. This fun activity is suited to children of all ages, with Montana Family Market the ideal place for a great family day out.
