Fun Kids’ Activities for the School Holidays

The Christmas lights are twinkling; red, green and gold decorations are hanging from the tree; and the Christmas carols blaring from all stations…the festive season is here! As the school holidays draw ever nearer, it’s time to start planning some fun activities for the little ones. Here is a selection of exciting kids’ adventures happening during the upcoming school holidays.

Fun Kids’ Activities for the School Holidays 

Yeesh! Fun for Kids (Joburg)

This enjoyable children’s play centre has a fun-filled holiday programme planned for December 2018. Every hour, Yeesh! Hosts different holiday activities – under strict supervision – including baking, icing, face painting, pizza making, games, treasure hunts, painting, arts and crafts, and character visits. Children will get to enjoy all these exciting activities, for a full day or just select activities. Visit

Little Cooks Club (Joburg)

For the up-and-coming foodies, the Little Cooks Club is hosting some holiday cooking activities. From 1 to 22 December, 9.30am to 12pm, the Junior Chef Certificate Class will run, aimed at children from 7 to 15 years. This will get them interested in various ingredients and food preparation. Then, on 3 December from 10.30am to 1.30pm, chefs aged between 7 and 15 years can create a Christmas gingerbread house. Kids will have a great time creating and decorating their very own gingerbread house. Visit

Montana Family Market (Pretoria)

For a day of fun for the entire family, Pretoria’s Montana Family Market is always a great option. They organise a full children’s holiday programme and December 2018 is no different. On Saturday, 1 December, from 1pm to 1.45pm, Buster and Bella will be putting on a show for the Montana birthday weekend. There will also be face painting and mardi gras performers from 10am to 1pm. The next day, from 12pm to 2pm, the celebrations will continue with an African drumming workshop. Face painting and mardi gras performers will be running 12pm to 1pm.

The following weekend, on Saturday, 8 December from 11am to 1pm, Montana Family Market will host its exciting Water Fun Day with dunk tanks and slides for all the kids. And then, on Saturday, 15 December from 11am to 1pm, Montana is hosting a must-attend Superhero Party. The children will get to meet their heroes while enjoying balloon sculpting and face painting.  Visit

Dolphins by Starlight (Durban)

Head over to Durban’s uShaka Marine World for the highly-anticipated Dolphins by Starlight evening themed, ‘Under the African Skies’. Children will be entranced by the beautiful Sea World dolphins performing dazzling aquatic aerobatics to Christmas soundtracks and live, themed music, accompanied by great local artists. This will run from 7 to 13 December from 6.30pm. Besides the Dolphins by Starlight, there is also the Sea World aquarium and Wet ‘n Wild slip n slides. Visit

Umgeni Steam Railway (Kloof)

Step back in time has you embark on an extremely enjoyable train ride which heads from Kloof to Inchanga Station and back, travelling along the stunning Valley of 1000 Hills. From 15 to 23 December there will be daytime Santa trips and evening Christmas carol’s trips with Santa and his elves visiting passengers on the train. The Inchanga craft market will sell Christmas goodies and food an there will be carols-by candlelight in the picnic area. Visit

Wits Planetarium (Joburg)

For a fun, educational holiday experience, stop by the Wits Planetarium where the children will get to experience the wonders of the solar system, take an imaginary journey to all the planets and learn about the expansive universe. There are Space Travel shows on Saturday, 1, 8 and 15 December at 10.30am, with another show on 15 December at 12.30pm. Visit

Pantomime – The Boy Who Cried Ninja (Joburg)

The festive season just doesn’t feel right without some pantomime fun. Catch Alex Latimer’s ‘The Boy Who Cried Ninja’ from 4 to 22 December at Nelson Mandela Square. In this show, Tim witnesses some strange happenings around his house, but no one believes his explanations, rather, his parents punish him with chores. To save himself, he hatches a clever plan to expose the truth. This delightful show bubbles with humour from start to finish and is ideal for children aged 4 to 10 years. Visit

Pantomime – The Elves & The Shoemaker (Cape Town)

Then onto Nassau Theatre, from 17 to 22 December at 10.30am, for ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’, a magical fairytale about two elves that make beautiful shoes for the poor shoemaker and his wife. After each show, the audience will get to meet Father Christmas, who will hand out sweets to all of the children. Parents are asked to bring a present or a second-hand toy for an underprivileged child to put under the Elves’ Christmas tree. Visit
